ReLEx smile in a nutshell:
- Treatment without flap
- Minimally invasive technique
- Quick recovery
- Extremely precise treatment
A milestone in laser surgery
Apart from the established techniques PRK/LASEK and femto-LASIK, Medifocus also performs the unique laser eye surgery technique ReLEx smile (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) as one of the few centers in Europe. This is a minimally invasive flapless surgical procedure with a shorter recovery period. The Zeiss company is writing history with the introduction of the ReLEx smile technique on the eye laser market.
Step-by-step approach to a sharper vision
Our experienced surgeon guides you to a life without glasses or contact lenses in 3 simple steps.
The VisuMax femtosecond laser creates a thin lenticule and an incision in the cornea measuring less than 2 mm. The lenticule has the exact shape and volume needed to treat your vision defect.
The surgeon removes the lenticule through the incision, without cutting a flap. Unlike PRK/LASEK, the ocular surface is not treated, leaving the corneal upper layers almost completely intact.
The minimally invasive removal of the lenticule changes the shape of the cornea, correcting the refractive error of the eye. The new shape of the cornea bends the light in a different way, situating the focus of the light on the retina after the laser eye surgery.
Discover the benefits
The ReLEx smile technique has a number of important benefits compared to PRK/LASEK and LASIK. The most important disadvantages of the old techniques have disappeared, whereas the advantages remain. We have gathered the main characteristics:
- Flapless treatment
As the surgeon does not fold back the corneal flap, there is no risk of displacement or loss of the flap. The risk of dry eyes after the laser eye surgery is performed will be minimal, as many corneal nerves responsible for tear regulation remain intact.
- Quick treatment carried out with 1 laser
The high-precision femtosecond laser carries out the correction in 1 ‘movement’ in just a few minutes. The effect of the treatment is already visible 24 hours after surgery. Visual acuity typically occurs around 6 weeks.
- Minimal surgery at the surface
As the correction is carried out in the lenticule and not at the surface, the cornea remains almost completely intact.
- Exceptionally precise treatment
The Carl Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser is precise up to the micrometer. The microscope follows the exact position of the eye during the treatment, allowing the surgeon to immediately adjust when needed.
