ReLEx smile in a nutshell:
- Treatment without flap
- Minimally invasive technique
- Quick recovery
- Extremely precise treatment
A milestone in laser surgery
Apart from the established techniques PRK/LASEK and femto-LASIK, Medifocus also performs the unique laser eye surgery technique ReLEx smile (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) as one of the few centers in Europe. This is a minimally invasive flapless surgical procedure with a shorter recovery period. The Zeiss company is writing history with the introduction of the ReLEx smile technique on the eye laser market.
The ReLEx smile technology exists since 2010. Medifocus is one of the first centres worldwide to use this technology. The number of treatments continues to increase exponentially and the technology has since been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA.
The clinics that are currently using the Visumaxlaser have starting favouring this technique over the older techniques such as the Femto-LASIK and PRK/LASEK. This doesn’t mean that the older treatments, based on the excimer technology, will disappear entirely. They will continue to be used in select cases in the future.
Step-by-step approach to a sharper vision
Our experienced surgeon guides you to a life without glasses or contact lenses in 3 simple steps.
The VisuMax femtosecond laser creates a thin slice of cornea tissue (lenticule). This takes 30 seconds and doesn’t hurt at all. The lenticule has the exact shape and volume needed to treat your vision defect. In fact the lenticule has the same strength as the contact lens that is necessary to correct your eye.
The surgeon removes the lenticule on the side of the cornea. This process is entirely painless because the eye is desensitized with eye drops. As opposed to the PRK/LASEK and Femto-LASIK treatments, the ocular surface is not treated. Thus, the outer layers of the cornea stay intact. This makes a big difference since this is where the nerve fibers are located in the eye. The ReLEx smile leaves these small nerves intact, thereby ensuring an entirely painless treatment and a quick recovery.
The minimally invasive removal of the lenticule changes the shape of the cornea. This changes the way the cornea refracts the light and the focus of light in the eye, thereby correcting the refractive error of the eye. The strength of the glasses is permanently corrected within the eye. As a result glasses or contact lenses become entirely redundant.
Discover the benefits
The ReLEx smile technique has a number of important benefits compared to PRK/LASEK and LASIK. The most important disadvantages of the old techniques have disappeared, whereas the advantages remain. We have gathered the main characteristics:
1. The highest security
As the correction is carried out in the cornea tissue and not at the surface, the cornea remains almost completely intact. The ReLEx smile treatment is minimally invasive and is proven the safest out of all treatments.
2. Exceptionally precise treatment
The Carl Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser is precise up to the micrometer. The microscope follows the exact position of the eye during the treatment. This makes sure the eye gets closer to its zero strength objective than other treatments. The chance of needing a second treatment is less than 1%. In comparison: for Femto-LASIK and PRK/LASEK the chance is between 3 to 5 %
3. Quick and easy treatment
The high-precision femtosecond laser carries out the correction in 1 ‘movement’ and in just a few minutes. The average duration is less than 4 minutes in the hands of an experienced surgeon. It is impossible to blink accidentally during the treatment because the eye is held open. There are also a few safety mechanisms that prevent you from looking in the wrong direction. In short, the ReLEx smile treatment is a very easy and quick treatment to undergo as a patient. Our patient testimonials are the best proof.
4. Flapless treatment
The biggest difference compared to LASIK surgery is the fact that the surgeon does not fold back the corneal flap. As a result, the risk of dry eyes after this type of laser eye surgery will be minimal. The nerve fibres that are responsible for tear regulation remain intact. Another advantage is the fact that the eye does not become more vulerable after treatment, while after LASIK surgery there is a possibility of displacement of the flap, due to rubbing or other trauma. This is impossible after ReLEx smile surgery.
