Astigmatism

What is astigmatism?

With astigmatism, the curvature of your cornea is not the same in all axes. So, your eye looks like a rugby ball, distorting your vision. Surveys show that some 1 in 3 people suffer from disruptive astigmatism. Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses. But the cylindrical lenses used for this often cause image distortion, which can be hard to tolerate. And with astigmatism, contact lenses must stay perfectly in place, which is not always possible. So, these devices have their limitations, making the option of surgery a definitive solution.

What does an eye with astigmatism look like?

If the surface of the cornea does not have the same curvature in every direction, light rays converge at a focal point that is more oval and elongated, thus not concentrated. Ophthalmologists express astigmatism in a cylindrical value (such as -2 diopters) and an orientation between 0° and 180°. By lasering the cornea, the surgeon re-creates its round shape.

How can astigmatism be treated?

Do you have astigmatism and would rather not use glasses or contact lenses? Several treatments are available:

  • Laser eye surgery
  • Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)
  • Lens replacement

Which treatment is best for you is determined during the preliminary examination.

Arne V.H.

I was even able to get back to work the day after surgery. Only needed to use the eye drops regularly during a few weeks but at this moment I no longer need them. My overall experience is hugely satisfying.
